Between 2006 and 2007 alone, India lost 80,128 ponds and tanks to urbanization, encroachment and neglect — taking 1.95 million hectares of potential irrigation area with them (Ministry of Jal Shakti, 2022). Untreated waste turns the ones left behind into breeding grounds for disease. Rejuvenation restores a pond's storage capacity, water quality and place in the local ecosystem — sized to the site, not a generic template.
Why it matters
It takes irrigation capacity, groundwater recharge and water quality down with it — for the whole community around it, not just the site itself.
