Between 2006 and 2007 alone, India lost 80,128 ponds and tanks to urbanization, encroachment and neglect — taking 1.95 million hectares of potential irrigation area with them (Ministry of Jal Shakti, 2022). Untreated waste turns the ones left behind into breeding grounds for disease.
